Hot Tub Electrics
Hot tub electrical installations are covered by Part P of the Building regulations. They require that a qualified and competent registered electrician complete the installation. This is to ensure the safety of the installation and the user. We all know that water and electricity are a dangerous mix. It is especially important to ensure any electrical installations that comes into contact with water, such as hot tubs, are installed safely. The easiest way to ensure your hot tub installation meets requirements is to select a NICEIC registered electrician to install your hot tub electrics. Registered electricians have their work regularly assessed for both compliance with regulations and competence in execution of work. They are permitted to certify their electrical work and will notify the relevant building control office on your behalf. Hawtin Electrical Oxford are proud to be Part P compliant electricians registered with NICEIC.
Hot Tub Electrical Installation Requirements
By choosing a registered electrician to install your hot tub electrics you can be certain that all relevant requirements and guidelines will be followed. Some of the requirements your hot tub installation must meet include:
- Your hot tub must not share a supply with any other appliance and must be wired on its own fused spur to your consumer unit.
- Your hot tub installation must be protected by a Mini circuit Breaker (MCB). This must cover not only the maximum amperage of the hot tub but also an uplift of 25% amperage to provide effective protection.
- An adequate Residual Current Device (RCD) must be installed on the hot tub circuit to protect you from earth current leakage. The RCD will switch off power if it detects a fault. This could be caused by damage to the cable or if water enters the connectors.
- SWA (armoured) cabling should be used to wire the hot tub to protect the wiring from damage.
- A waterproof IP65 rotary isolation switch is recommended so your that hot tub can be isolated outdoors in an emergency or when servicing is undertaken. For safety this must be installed at least two metres away from the hot tub.
Hiring a fully qualified and Part P-registered electrician for your hot tub electrical installation will make sticking to the regulations far less daunting and will give you great peace of mind. They will take care of all the technical details and leave you to enjoy your new hot tub, safe in the knowledge that the installation has been completed safely.
